Maggie's School was built in the year 2008 by Wink McLeod in memory of her daughter Maggie McLeod. Wink wanted to build something in honor of her late daughter. GOA's Bishop David Thagana had visited Turkana five years earlier and when he went to Akatuman which is the heart of Turkana he felt the urge to build a school there as the residents had no education at all, only that he did not have the means to build one and so when he heard of Wink's idea to build a school in Kenya in memory of her daughter it seemed like a prayer answered. He shared the idea with Connie Cheren, Wink's sister, and thus the idea of building the school up in Akatuman, an area severely struck by water and food shortage, was born.
The school was dedicated by Bishop David Thagana in July 22nd 2008. Present during the dedication, among others, was the Member of Parliament for that area, Hon. David Ethuro.
The school was registered as a government school in the year 2009. Currently the school has 257 children who go to school there, 45 adults who also learn there and only 2 teachers to cater for them.
The headteacher of the school, Mr. Fredrick Etabo, has been dedicated since the opening of the school to ensure that the school runs and that the children are well taken care of.
